FUTURE OF AIRPORTS
Programme Suggested “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 21. Over the next 20 years, New Zealand should embark on an airport development programme, the second phase of which should be the development of Christchurch as a major export centre, said a Wellington architect, Mr W. F. Ponder.
Addressing a conference on “the future development of international air freight,” Mr Ponder said the first stage would be to develop Auckland Airport as a major staging point for all international freight. “To encourage this development, I suggest that Auckland Airport be made a free port—that is, that transit car goes can be sorted and repackaged free of Customs duty. “Phase three would have Palmerston North as the logical centre of the Wellington, Manawatu, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay area.” Mr Ponder said that it was necessary to set up a fulltime national study group to investigate and report on the development of airports, especially international airports.
