Skin-Diver Drowned

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 21. A skin-diver sank and drowned today as he reached for help from his companions who were 6ft away in a runabout off Tiritiri Island in the Hauraki gulf. One of them made a short but vain search for him before running out of air. The skin-diver’s body was found in 35ft of water about an hour and 10 minutes later by a member of the coastguard.

The dead man was Graham James William Kairan, aged 29, a fibrous plasterer, married with one child, of 82 Rosamund avenue. Mount Roskill, Auckland. Mr Kairau, who had been gathering crayfish with a friend, was seen to be in trouble as he swam to the boat and moments later he sank.
