First Loss In Table Tennis

The Malaysian, L. N. Ming (Avonside), suffered his first defeat of the season, beaten in straight sets by V. N. Brightwell (Selwyn I), in the third round of the inter-club table tenis competition last evening. Ming, although handicapped by a pulled muscle in his right side, was well beaten by Brightwell, 21-16, 21-16. Earlier, Ming had been hard pressed by the defensive players, H. P. Holt and P. J. Ives (both of Selwyn I). Ming found his attacking game hard to play against these two, and had to revert to an unusual defensive roll In some rallies. Holt and Ives both took a set, but Ming was able to lift his game in the vital third set to win on both occasions N. B. Radford (Wallabies Red) is the only unbeaten player after three rounds. He won two of his singles in good style, but dropped a set to N. Saunders (Linwood ID. the Canterbury Indoor basketball selec°Hoon Hay had to fight hard to beat the lowly Wallabies Green team, 7-5. K. J.■ and G. R. Saunders both lost to K. Cassidy, and M. R. Spinks lost to R. G. Hart in straight sets. Points after three rounds are: Wallabies Red, Riccarton and Boon Hay 6. Dinwood I. Selwyn I and Dalllngton 4. Wallabies Green, Selwyn H, Linwood II and Avonside 0.
