Three Leading Junior Chess
R. Chaplin, J. Mulligan and T. Ivory are the leading players after the fifth round of the Canterbury junior chess championships. Thirty-two boys from 10 schools are taking part, including one each from Timaru and Nelson. The first two boys at the end of the championships will qualify for the national trials later in the year. Results of the fifth round matches were: C. Oakley (H.H.S.) beat P. Nevin (St. Bede’s C.); D. Mackintosh (5.8.H.5.) beat C. Baker (C.H.S.); C. Stroud (C.C.) beat M. O’Connell (St. Bede’s C.); J. White (8.H.5.) beat G. Scott (8.H.5.); W. Twiss (St. AC.) beat M. Gillick (St. Bede’s C.): M. Yeabsley (5.8.H.5.) beat J. McCash (C.H.S.); A. Carpinter (St. Bede’s C.) beat D. Cockerell (C.H.S.); E. Biddington (H.H.S.) beat P Walsh (St. Bede's C.); R. Burnev (H.H.S.) beat A Walls (8.H.5.): K. Telford (St. Bede’s C.) beat O. Hughes (8.H.5.); H. Duncan (5.8.H.5.) beat L. Mann (8.H.5.): P. Lublow (C.H.S.) beat P. Carpinter (St. Bede’s C.): B. Henderson (5.8.H.5.) beat R. Temby (5.8.H.5.): J. Sheaf (Waimea C.) beat B. McLay (St. A.C.): R. Chaplin (C.8.H.5.) drew with J. Mulligan (Timaru 8.H.5.); J. Jensen (C.8.H.5.) drew with W. Rosenberg (C.H.S.); T. Ivory (5.8.H.5.) and R. Suggate (5.8.H.5.) adjourned.
