PRO. BOUT ARRANGED. TEST DECLINED George To Fight Italian In Pre-Title Work-out

The New Zealand feather-weight champion and British Empire title contender, T. George, will fight the top-class Melbourne-based Italian, D. Chiloiro, at Canterbury Court on May 25.

The fight will be George’s biggest challenge to date. He was beaten by Chiloiro on points in Australia, in his sixth professional bout, and is anxious to reverse the decision.

The president of the Canterbury Boxing Association (Mr E. G. Pocock) said last evening that Chiloiro had been guaranteed a purse of £4OO, win or lose. George would probably get £3OO for a win, £2OO if he loses. 'lt Is big money, but Chiloiro, a tough, hard-hitting, no-nonsense fighter from Italy, is currently earning big money in Melbourne and Sydney by beating all-comers in the feather-weight division,” said Mr Pocock. “We have pinned our faith on George. He is in the running for an Empire title bout and a challenge has been lodged with the British Boxing Board of Control against the holder, J. O’Brien, of Glasgow.

Amarfio. Chiloiro is a puncher and a crowd-pleaser, too. “It will be no walk-over, and if George wins it will make an opening for him to challenge the Australian feather-weight title-holder, J. Famechon.” Offer Refused

to fight the Australians, and the cost, £450 tax-free to the council after paying for accommodation and travelling expenses for the New Zealand team and trophies for both teams.

Seven of the current New Zealand amateur champions— W. Kini (heavy-weight), B. Forder (light heavy-weight), K. Mahunga (middle-weight), S. Nomura (welter-weight), W. Graham (light welterweight) and R. Carstairs (bantam-weight) and P. Domney (light-weight)—are not available for the national team. Licence Withdrawn

The C.B.A. management committee has refused the invitation of the New Zealand Boxing Council to stage a match between a visiting team of Australian amateur champions and a New Zealand team. The council asked the C.B.A. to pay £450 for the contest.

The Wellington Boxing Association had successfully applied to the council to stage the tournament—but then withdrew its offer. The C.BJL committee, after careful consideration this week, also decided not to hold the tournament Two factors influenced the committee —the calibre of the New Zealand boxers available

Mahunga has lost his licence, Nomura is over weight, and Carstairs is too heavy for his division. This leaves only three genuine champions, the light middle-weight, K. Milford (Auckland), the featherweight, B. Kendall (Canterbury), and the fly-weight, R. Barber (Masterton) to meet

“The Chiloiro-George bout will be a tough-work-out for George. He showed that he can punch hard when he beat

Australia in a so-called “test” match.

The Australians will meet a team in Auckland, and another in Invercargill, before the “test” Mr Pocock said the boxing council would not guarantee that the best available team of New Zealand boxers would not be used in these two tournaments.

This meant that if any of the best boxers were knocked out or beaten on a t.k.0., they would not be available for the “test" under the medical requirements of New Zealand boxing.
