Disputed Soccer Match To Be Played

The second division soccer match between Waterside and University will be played later in the season, It was decided, by five votes to two, at a meeting of the Canterbury Football Association Management Committee last evening. The proposal was carried after an amendment that the points be awarded to Waterside was defeated.

Both teams had claimed full points for the match, which should have been played last Saturday. Waterside had been told that University had defaulted, but Univeristy claimed it had only asked for a postponement, and when it did not receive a reply to its letter, had attempted to fulfil the fixture. However, the Waterside team did not appear at the venue fixed for the match although the University team had arrived.

The secretary (Mr S. G. Browne) said that when he cleared the mail from the association’s box before last Tuesday’s meeting there was no letter from the University club. This had occurred after the president (Mr J. Smith) had told a member of the University some days earlier that a letter stating its difficulties over the vacation period should be in the hands of the secretary in time for the meeting. It was agreed that Mr Browne should have called a meeting of the emergency committee later in the week when the letter was received before advising the Waterside dub that the game had been defaulted. Mr Browne had asked the match committee secretary (Mr R. Storer) if the three matches involving the University club could be postponed to a later date as the University club requested. Mr Storer had informed him that it would be impossible unless the matches were played on the immediate Sunday so Mr Browne defaulted University in the three grades. The Watersiders Club was informed of this before the coach of the University second division team (Mr G. Spiers) had told Mr Browne on Saturday morning that he would be fielding a full team. By this time the Waterside players had agreed to work a shift on the Saturday -afternoon. Mr J. Thompson said that the letter from University had not stated that the University teams were defaulting but had asked for its matches to be postponed. After considerable discussion it was agreed to play the match | later because of the confusion

that had arisen. It wa3 agreed both teams had a legitimate argument. Madrussan Clearance Unless the association receives a letter of clearance for F. Madrussan from the Verona club, in Italy, by mid-day Fri. day, he will not be able to play for Christchurch City on Saturday. “We are supposed to have clearances from players coming from overseas,” said Mr Smith. “We have been led to believe he has a clearance in his possession.”

It was agreed that subject to the emergency committee receiving some form of transfer, he would be stood down.

No Postponements. Club matches in all grades will be played on the Saturday of Queen’s Birthday week-end, June 3. This is the same day as the Gordon Cup match between Canterbury and Wellington. There will be no club matches on the Monday when the Canterbury senior team will play Otago in the first leg of the Jones Cup. Schools’ Tourney.
