Paper Fashions Arrive
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 8.
A full kit of women’s fashions made of paper reached Auckland from London by air today. It included everything from raincoats to trouser suits and ballgowns. The wardrobe is on its way to the Hamilton jubilee show later this month and will then be exhibited throughout the country.
today Miss C. S. Hilton, an English model who is representing the designer In New Zealand, paraded some of the 20 new garments as they were unloaded from the aircraft. .
“Paper has developed from being a cheap garment to high fashion,” she said. “In Britain you can buy a
paper frock for between 12s 6d and 15s in a department store. You could wear this sort of frock at least twice. Then there are the betterquality, high-fashion fabrics, of woven paper mesh. “They are still cheap, because the fabric comes in sheets, can be cut out easily, and because It Is self supporting does not need to be lined.” Mrs T. Hill, an Auckland fashion promoter who has Imported the present wardrobe, said: “The raincoats would cost about 30s but with a greater sale the price would come down. “There is no hem and If the coat is too long It only requires a few seconds with a pair of scissors to fix it” And what happened to the girl who wore her paper frock in the rain? “Well, nothing. All these woven ones can be washed,” said Mrs Hill. “The cheap ones can’t, but even if they get wet they
won’t disintegrate. If something gets spilt on one at a party it just means you can’t wear it again.”
