D. Hulme Takes Lead In World Motor Series
(N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MONTE CARLO. D. Hulme (New Zealand) took the lead in the world motor racing championship series when he won the Monaco Grand Prix in a Repco-Brabham on Sunday.
New Zealand drivers dominated the race, with Amon taking third place in his Ferrari, and B. R. McLaren fourth in a McLaren-M4B.
Hulme won the 100-lap race by more than a lap from G. HiH (Britain) who drove a Lotus.
Hulme had a runaway victory after the pursuing Ferrari of L. Bandini (Italy) had crashed and caught fire on the eighty-second lap. Bandini was taken to hospital with serious burns. His condition was critical, the hospital reported later.
Hulme leads the world series with 12 points from two races. P. Rodriguez (Mexico) winner of the South African Grand Prix in January, is second with 11 points after finishing fifth in his Cooper-Mas-erati at Monte Carlo. J. Brabham (Australia) the reigning world champion was favoured to win the race after putting up the fastest time in practice, but his Repco-Brab-
ham broke a flywheel on the first lap and he retired. J. Stewart (8.R.M., Britain) whose two-litre car was giving away 1000 c.c. to his immediate rivals, seized the lead on the seventh lap, but he was forced out of the race on
the fifteenth lap with a broken gear box. Hulme took over the lead from Bandini while J. Clark (Lotus, Britain) forced bis way through the field to threaten the leaders. Hulme sped away from Bandini who was being hard pressed by McLaren. Clark after clocking a fast Imin 29.55ec on the fortythird lap, was on McLaren’s tail. But Clark went out of the race almost immediately when he ran into McLaren’s car and then into a wail. Clark was not hurt, and McLaren was able to continue. Amon, in the second Ferrari, took over from Clark in fourth position on the fortyfourth lap. Hulme continued to set the pace, but Bandini remained in touch and the gap between the first two varied between seven and 18 seconds before Bandini's crash. Hulme’s time for the 196mile race was 2:34:34.3.
Former Champion.—A former undefeated holder of the Australian. New Zealand, and Wellington amateur heavy-weight boxing titles, Mr H. N. Taylor, of Howick, has died, aged 88.
