RARE VISITOR TO LYTTELTON

Japanese tankers are rare visitors to the port of Lyttelton. The 12,642-ton, eight-year-old motor tanker Eiwa Maru owned by the Taiheiyo Kaiun (Pacific Transportation) Company arrived at Lyttelton yesterday to discharge 4000 tons of a mixed petroleum cargo loaded at Singapore, Adelaide and Melbourne.

The last Japanese tanker to call at Lyttelton was the small bulk-tallow tanker Nippo Maru No. 3 of 1558 tons gross and owned by the Okada Kaiun K.K. She loaded for Shanghai in June, 1964. The present visitor, which is due to sail for Abadan, in the Persian Gulf, today, has a deadweight capacity of 19,858 tons and on her present voyage brought a cargo of 16,395 tons, most of which was discharged at Auckland and Wellington. Commanded by Captain Tetsuo Kuwahara, the Eiwa Maru has an all-Japanese crew consisting of 14 officers and 28 seamen. She is one of seven tankers owned by the Taiheiyo Kaiun Company,

which also owns three dry cargo vessels. The Eiwa Maru has a speed of 15 knots.
