ADDINGTON MARKET Store Calves Meet Sound Sale

Another entry of close on 3000 store cattle was offered at Addington market yesterday, and for calves the sale was a very sound one throughout. Values were quoted at fully firm, with some sales of both steer and heifer calves 20s a head stronger than last sale. Plain quality steers and unattractive old run cows predominated in the smaller entry of adult cattle. For the quality on offer values could be regarded as firm, but it was not a strong sale. Another fairly large entry of store lambs was offered, but apart from the best pens of ewe lambs, values were back on last week. Plain wether lambs met a very hard 01e. Two-tooth ewes met practi-

cally no Inquiry, while most sales of adult ewes were in the 30s to 40s range. It was an unattractive end-of-season selection.

The store sheep yarding numbered 7610 compared with 9025 last sale. It comprised 2248 ewe lambs (3308 last week), 3297 wether lambs (4870), 465 two-tooth ewes (286), 1338 adult ewes (411), and 262 wethers (150). The store cattle entry totalled 2936 compared with 2632 last sale. It comprised 1773 steer calves, 1000 heifer calves, and 163 adult cattle. Addington market will be held later next week. Fat stock will be sold on Wednesday, and store stock on Thursday. Store Lambs Another Mzeable entry of store lambs was offered thia week, but apart from tho very best pens of ewe lambs, they were harder to sell. There was very little inquiry for the lighter carry-over type of wether lamb, and these showed the moat marked decline. With the exception of best ewe lambs all classes appeared to be easier by 2s to 3s a head, and a number of pens were passed. Fewer shorn Romneys were included tn the wether lamb section, but there were more pens of Down cross lambs, and also a few pens of hill country halfbreds.

A few of the best flne-woolled wether lambs sold from 42s to 45s 6d, with one sale at 48s 6d, but the majority sold from about 31a to 34s 6d, with small down to 265. Romneys in the wool sold from 41s to 44s for the best with average from 34s to 38s. Best Down cross sold to 465, with most of the others at 34s 6d to 39s 6d.

The ewe lamb offering again included quite a number of very attractive Romneys in the wool, and these met a firm sale. One of the feature sales of the day. and of the season, was that of 52 fine Romney cross ewe lambs at 735. but values for the best of the yarding generally ranged from 50s to 61s, with others down to 425. Shorn Romneys did not meet a strong sale, and values for well-grown lots ranged from 41s to 475. Corriedale and halfbred ewe lambs met a very weak inquiry, sales ranging from 33s to 37s for average quality, with an odd sale to 48s 6d. Sales of store lambs included: Ewe lambs: N. C. Davidson (Te Oka), 143 Romneys at 61s: M. R. Smith (Runsells Flat), 127 Romneys at 45s to 50s 6d: D. W. Smith (Russelils Flat), 80 Romneys at 535; R. E. Watson (Ohoka), 55 Romneys at 575; F. D. Richards (Windwhistle), 221 shorn Romneys at 40s to 455; G. C. Urquhart (Flock Hill). 442 halfbreds at 28s 6d to 48s 6d; A. W. Trolove (Cheviot). 183 shorn Romneys at 41s to 475; C. C. Manson (Diamond Harbour), 76 ehorn at 30s 6d to 35s 6d. Wethers: Estate Mrs M. J. McAdam (Cheviot), 92 Corriedales at 45s 6d; G. C. Urquhart (Flock Hill), 362 halfbreds at 31s to 425; estate W. H. Atkinson (Mason Hills), 180 halfbreds at 28s to 41s; Rogerson Run Company (Hanmer), 254 halfbreds at 33s 6d to 425; Gibson Brothers (Lees Valley), 116 halfbreds at 48s 6d; L. B. Burnett (Lees Valley), 101 at 425; S. C. Browne (Oxford), 130 shorn Romneys at 33s to 425; R. Swarbrick (Okuku), 198 shorn Corriedales at 33s 6d to 40s 6d. Store Sheep Although a fair gallery followed the two-tooth and adult ewe sales, most of the farmers* were spectators, and inquiry was very weak. There was practically no interest in the half dozen pens of two-tooth ewes, and four of them were passed. The only sales were a pen of mated Romneys at 555, and a pen of hill-country halfbreds at 47s 6d. The other pens were passed at 48s to 535. The adult ewes were a typical end-of-season selection, and most of the sales were made at less than 40s a head. Old ewes with barely a season’s usefulness left sold from 28s 6d to 355, and there were a number of sales of sounder-mouthed ewes at 38s to 41s. Some fourtooth halfbreds sold at 495, and Romneys of the same age at 46s to 50s.

The only quoted sale was:— R. S. Harrison (Domett), S 3 two-tooth mated Romney cross at 555.

Store Calves The «tore celt entry «hewed a rise of 820 on last sale, but the adult cattle yarding declined by 520. Quality in the calf entry was again Improved, with some large lines of attractive calve from hill-country properties. The sale was a sound one throughout, with some sales of both steer and heifer calves 20s a head in advance of last week. Where Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross calves have predominated in previous sales, there was this week quite a good selection of Herefords. There were also consignments from as far south as Central Otago. Most of the entry was bought by buyers within the province, but several lots were also purchased for the West Coast.

The feature sales of the day were made when a line of Hereford calves were offered on account of the Berrledale Farm (Amberley). The steers were of exceptional size, and well marked, and the top pen sold at £33 se. The heifers met a similar sale, with the first pen at £3l and the second at £3l IBs.

Good quality steer ealves sold from £24 IBs to £27 ss. with an odd sale to £33 ss: average to good sold from £2O 10s to £24. with smaller down to £l5 10s. Very few pens of good quality steers were included in the small adult cattle yarding A fair gallery followed the sale, and with quality taken into account, values could be regarded as firm. It was not a good quality offering. Several pens of hard-condi-tioned unattractive run cows met a steady sale, but at very modest values.
