COACHING FOR TOP JUNIORS

(By Our Tennis Reporter)

A South Island coaching school for juniors will be instituted by the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association this year.

Under an ambitious plan for a school similar to the one held in Auckland in the the August school holidays for a number of years, the association will seek juniors from all associations in the island. The school will be held from August 22 to 26 and those attending will live at Connon Hall, players being transported to the courts each day. The president of the association (Mr R. B. Brown) said last evening that the scheme would be a costly one but he hoped that it would be worth it. Up to 60 boys and girls would be able to attend the coaching conducted by the Canterbury eoach, Mr S. Clarke, helped by professional coaches from other districts. The school will be held at

Wilding Park or at club courts and arrangements are being made to obtain alternative indoor facilities in case of rain. Auckland has conducted this type of school must successfully for junior players from throughout the Dominion. Their programmes have included physical training, stroke production and tennis tactics. Players have been nominated to attend by their associations and they have usually shown a marked improvement.

Coaching schools have been held in Christchurch before in school holidays but on a much smaller scale and only for local players.

The Australian Lawn Tennis Association has formed a six-member committee to clarify Australia’s attitude toward world open tennis. The committee, representing each State, was directed to polish up the Australian position before the International Lawn Tennis Federation holds its annual meeting in Luxembourg in July.
