Rail Meeting Will Delay Express
The south-bound express will not be able to leave on time on Tuesday morning because of a decision at a special meeting of the executive of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants yesterday afternoon.
Branch members will now stop work between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.. not between 1 p.m. and 3 p m. as set down by the national council. This was announced last evening by the chairman of the branch (Mr P. Sweeney) and the secretary (Mr J. F. McDowell). They said the meeting would be addressed by Mr D. M. Kane, the South Island workshops national I councillor. Sixty cargo-shed workers decided on Wednesday not to attend an afternoon meeting, i But Messrs Sweeney and McDowell said that the meeting of the executive was not con-
vened because of any protest by any section of the membership. The time was amended to give a greater proportion of the members the opportunity to hear the address. Details of the railway services affected would be discussed with the department today. The traffic manager of the Railways Department in Christchurch (Mr M. R. Leineweber) last evening said he would not be able to say what alterations would be necessary to scheduled train services till he had heard from the union.
