This Year's Suits Will Be Dark With Colour

Men are moving info the age of elegance. This is said fo lie somewhere between the boundaries of impeccable taste and studied understatement. This definition applies admirably to this year's styles in town suits.

Basically there are no major changes in styles, but there are modifications which are pointers to the trends to be expected in the not too far distant future—-easier-fitting shoulders are being featured on some of this year’s suits. There are variations in style details such as collar shapes, pocket treatments and button placements; there is some variation in the length of vents and coats are showing flare. Slimline If any one thing is clear from the suit styles on display now, it is clear that the day of cuffed trousers is nearing its end. It is also clear that the fashionable trouser silhouette is the tapered slimline. Shape is noticeably more of a factor in this year’s suits. Some have a mere suggestion of contour, while in others the waist suppres-

sion is slightly more pronounced although flare at back and bottom is strictly controlled. This year’s emphasis on colour expresses itself in darks - with - colours the reflection of which can be taken up in the shirt and tie. Darks-wlth-clours are, in other words, dark-without-drabness. Blue is making a bid for top rating as a fashion colour in suitings. It is gaining in favour because of the variety in which it is offering—from soft-blues to royal, from junior navy to dark navy. Brown is also to the fore as a fashion colour for suits,

in keeping with the darks-with-colours trend. In fact, brown best exemplifies the character of the trend in that it shows, with surprising versatility, how a dark foundation colour is given new depths and subtleties in blends with other colours—browns with other shades of brown, with blue, with green, with grey. In the same way, through imaginative use of colour in the weave, dark-grey and mid-grey suitings are making a distinctive new impression that maintains the popularity and the fashion standing of these shades.
