Appeal By Red Cross
An appeal for jig saw puzzles to stock the library service of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society was made at the annual meeting of the society last week. The past year had been very successful and the library had again provided of great interest to many “shut in” people, said the chairman (Miss M. A. Woods) in her annual report. The library now had 50 helpers and 500 readers in 12 groups of pensioners’ cottages and 20 hospitals and homes. It had 5100 books excluding paper backs and magazines on its shelves, and this included many recent additions, said Miss Woods. Surplus books which were either unsuitable or duplicated had been passed on to Fitzgerald House, Salvation Army, Coronation Hospital and institutions under the Justice Department During the year, the service had transferred its premises to Cashel street where there was plenty of shelf space, and good access and parking for members and helpers, said Miss Woods.
