Promise Of Open Rugby On Tour
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON. The emphasis would be on open play during the All Blacks tour of Britain and France next winter, said the convener of the selection panel (Mr F. R. Allen) in London on Sunday. . Mr Allen said he was sure that New Zealand had the players to run the ball attractively. “We’ve an abundance of good three-quarters at the moment, and are well catered for in almost all departments of the game. “A couple of places where we’re not so strong are in the centres—our centre threequarter and second fiveeighths—and we’ve got to find top class fly halves.” The nucleus of the team would come from among the players chosen to play against the Lions last year. Mr Allen said he was dis appointed to hear while in
London suggestions that the Lions tour had involved far more “rough play” than usual by New Zealand teams. “I saw 18 of the 24 games played and the play was no harder or rougher than during any other tour. The tests were as clean as any I’ve ever seen.” Mr Allen said that the coming tour would be a big boost i for New Zealand’s players who, with the postponement :of the South African tour, had lost an opportunity to - keep up their international form.
