Vandalism

Sir,—Unless more severe punishment is introduced very soon against louts who wantonly destroy other people’s property and commit many other serious offences as well, the authorities have no hope of exercising any control against vandalism. On Thursday night of last week a car was stolen from an Armagh street parking area. The louts were not satisfied with this action; they took it to Ne’v Brighton and then burnt it. This car was valued at £750 and happened to belong to a very sick man with a wife and two young children. The insurance does not nearly cover the cost of another car. Why cannot the police be given more authority to deal with such vandalism? —Yours, etc, DISGUSTED NEW ZEALANDER. April 10, 1967.
