THE WORLD FRIENDSHIP, a Liberian tanker carrying 87,000 tons of oil, arriving at Thames Haven, below London, after making 26 miles of her 37-mile river journey at flood tide to avoid any possibility of grounding. The tanker has a draught of 46ft, said to be the deepest draught of any ship to enter the Thames estuary. At times the clearance was only 5ft, and an official of the Port of London Authority called it a “hair’s-breadth operation.”
