K. A. Aitken was fined £2O by the judicial committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday for breaking a riding engagement. Before the running of the Papanui Handicap the committee heard a charge laid against Aitken. It was alleged that he had broken a riding engagement previously made with Mr E. C. Roes, the husband of the owner of idle Chatter. Aitken admitted the charge. An Inquiry was held Into a severe check to Summer Dale, ridden by W. D. Skelton, as the horses left the starting gates In the Champagne Stakes. J. F. Grylls, the rider of Red Copy, was later charged with causing the interference. ' Evidence was heard from the stipendiary steward situated near the three furlongs and also from Skelton. Grylls, in his statement, told the committee that he realised interference had been caused but he was unable to prevent it as his mount had jumped from the starting gates inwards and taken the line of Summer Dale. The committee accepted the evidence of Grylls and dismissed the charge.
