WATER POLO VICTORY
The Canterbury water polo team showed an obvious superiority in its representative match against the New Zealand Army on Saturday. Canterbury won 12-4 and although its players had a majority of possession, the slowness of the older Army representatives often nullified the Canterbury attempts to quicken the pace of the game. From the initial swim-up R. J. Hay won the ball for Canterbury and a spate of quick passing in front of the opposition goal lead to a goal by the centre-forward, L. D. Mclntosh. The goal-keeper, I. S. Farquhar, sent his forwards away on attack after a fine save but a blockade of three Army backs prevented any goals being scored. However, I. L. Guntnorp scored twice soon after and at the end of the first quarter Canterbury led, 3-0. The former New Zealand selector and representative, W. H. Dyson, replied with a quick shot and D. Neery made no mistakes when awarded a penalty. W. R. Williamson, for Canterbury, was next to score with a powerful drive into the corner and the left-handed Hay scored to make It 5-2.
Gunthorp and Mclntosh then had several shots at the Army goal-keeper but were unable to score. T. M. McGirr. ' through a fast piece of following-up, split the defence open and netted. Dyson then scored from a penalty. The Canterbury players showed In the third quarter some of the moves which took them to the top at the recent national championships and Gunthorp and Mclntosh scored two goals each. Strong support was also given In this quarter bythe 15-year-old B. M. Mustchin.
In the fourth quarter, Dyson netted his third goal and for Canterbury K. Thornton and M. Scott scored.
