Mackenzie Equals 100yd Record

The New Zealand 440 yards champion, D. W. Mackenzie (Christchurch), equalled the New Zealand resident 100 yards record when he competed in the Marlborough festival athletics meeting at Blenheim on Saturday.

Mackenzie clocked 9.6 sec to equal the record of G. Davy (Auckland), C. McGuire (Otago) and M. Rae (Auckland). It was at the same meeting last year that Mackenzie recorded 9.ssec for 100 yards, the fastest time achieved by a New Zealander. However, it was not recognised as a national record because the wind gauge was working for only ssec instead of the required lOsec. In a 100 yards open handicap heat on Saturday Mackenzie was timed at 9.7 sec and in the final he did 9.Bsec. He also won the 220 yards handicap in 22sec.

It was all J. Dean (New Plymouth) in the cycling events. He won an Australian derby, the half-mile open handicap, the two-mile open handicap, the invitation and open handicap mile. The only event he did not win was the flve-mifle invitation scratch race, won by the Commonwealth Games representative, T. J. Tabak.
