U.K. Offers £1¼m To Fiji University
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SUVA, March 17. The British Government was prepared to offer £1,250,000 towards capital costs of the proposed South Pacific University at Suva, the Member for Social Services, Mr Vijay R. Singh, has announced.
Mr Singh said the British Government had been considering the recommendation of a mission headed by Lord Morris that a comprehensive university to serve the needs of English-speaking territories in the South Pacific be established at Suva.
Mr Singh said the British offer would be made available over about five years. “The British Government says it has made the offer bearing in mind the generous decision of the New Zealand Government to make avail-
able free of charge for the proposed university the installations of the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Lauthala Bay," Mr Singh said. Mr Singh said: “This generous offer from Britain without which it would scarcely have been possible to accept the New Zealand Government’s offer of the Lauthala Bay base will be greeted with enthusiasm by people not only of Fiji but of all Pacific territories from which students will come to this Pacific seat of learning.”
