Contraceptive Sale Restrictions Sought

(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, March 13. Concern at “the ease with which contraceptives, including the pill, are obtainable,” was expressed by the national convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union today.

At its session In Napier today, the convention decided that in view of “the increasing immorality among young people and the steep increase in venereal disease," it would request the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) to give the matter consideration and restrict the sale of contraceptives to chemist shops. Concern was expressed that fully-illustrated books on sex topics were available at shops and book stalls. The convention sought information from the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) on the steps taken to ensure censorship of such publications.

The Customs Department was commended for its efforts in preventing the smuggling of narcotic drugs into New Zealand, but the convention

urged the Government to take all possible steps to stem the growth of drug addiction and the culture of plants from which drugs were extracted.
