BUSINESS LIAISON AT UNIVERSITY

The business liaison officer of the University of Canterbury (Mr F. Whiteling) is seeking still wider contact with employers to discuss opportunities for graduates with in their organisations and also part-time work for students. Mr Whiteling said that in its inaugural year his office' had been in touch with scores of employers and also held interviews with more than 100 graduates or near graduates, half of whom secured congenial employment. The business liaison office was set up to inform graduates of known vacancies and inform them of fields in which their training could be used most effectively. It also

gathered information for employers who wanted university graduates. Mr Whiteling said his office provided an interview room where out-of-town employers could meet students. It arranged some careers lectures for studenis, and it handled placement w> cn requested. A .wall' charge was made to employers for this service. Employers wn-> had helped to finance the office in its establishment could set the charge off against their contribution. One Government department used the office for two days for interviews. Mr Whiteling said he had made many calls in the professions and industry to talk about the employment of graduates, but he was certain there were still many more to meet for mutual benefit. Apart from full-time employment, Mr Whiteling said he had inquiries from many students for part-time work. They wanted hours flexible enough to enable them to attend lectures but regular enough to give a steady income toward their expenses.
