Ten Records Broken By Junior Swimmers

It was certainly not swimming weather on Saturday, but the youngsters who had gathered at the Woolston Park pool for the first season of the Junior Olympics swam with such zest that 10 records were broken.

The best swimming was by the under-12 girls and the under-11 boys; competitors in these two classes established all the new marks.

Disqualification for an Incorrect turn after a record in the under-12 backstroke prevented Helen Sexton (Wharenui) from achieving a meritorious hattrick. She went on to win the freestyle and medley titles, establishing new figures in each event.

Kay Nielson (Wharenui), who was promoted to first in the backstroke event after Miss Sexton’s disqualification, made one of the finest swims of the session in winning the butterfly final. Her time of 26.8 sec, a record, was almost 4sec faster than the winner’s time in the under-12 boys' race. Wharenui’s crop of promising under-11 boys left no doubt as to their superiority in the section. Mark Harding won two finals in record times; Michael Lee gained a first and two seconds and Roy Gray a first and a second. It was not surprising that the club's teams won both the freestyle and the medley relay finals with record times. One of the most versatile competitors was Peter Adams (Spreydon) in the under-10 division. In four different strokes he gained two firsts, a second and a third.

Country swimmers had a successful day. The Amberley club had six swimmers at the pool, and each won a medal. One of the most successful was an Ashburton boy, John Barr, who, in four starts, won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

The meeting was opened by Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P., and the former New Zealand hockey representative, Mr J. C. Abrams, presented the medals.
