3000 At Rodeo In Rain
Cold, driving rain did not stop more than 3000 people attending the eighth annual rodeo of the Banks Peninsula Buck-Jumping and SteerRiding Association at Motukarara Racecourse on Saturday.
Entries for all events werehigh and in some events as many as 47 competitors tried their hand at controlling a wet steer. A judge of the steer-riding events (Mr M. Curie) said that some of the steers were in excellent condition for buck-jumping, but for the riders to stay on the back of a wet steer was like “walking on ice.”
The bronc-riders encountered different problems. As soon as the horses bucked the first time and lost their footing they lost all their devilry. Many horses just stood in the rain and refused to buck. Riders came from all parts of New Zealand.
One person was admitted to hospital. Thomas Darby, aged 17, of 10 Oakhurst place, broke his left wrist when he fell in the calf-riding event. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital, treated and discharged. Several riders suffered cramp in the cold conditions. The association bad at its disposal 40 wild horses, 80 steers, 28 run cows, and 30 sheep and calfs. The Waihora Pony Club Challenge Cup for the competitor gaining the most points was won by R. Robinson, of Tapanui. He also won the A. E. Dawber trophy for the most points in the open events. J. Perkins, of Mataura, won the C. R. Beckett trophy for most points in the novice events.
