TO CARRY ON

Surf Club’s Plans (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 10. Surf life-saving in Otago suffered through the shark fatality yesterday but the movement will continue at St. Clair and St. Kilda beaches. “We will carry on, even although our worst fears have been realised twice in the last three years,” said a life-saver at St. Kilda today.

“When Les Jordan was killed three years ago people stopped swimming at the beach. But gradually they came back. The same will probably happen again. “We have always known that sharks present us with the worst danger. We have always been afraid of them, even though there was no trouble for decades. We are not afraid of the water or the people we have to rescue.”

The life-saver said the movement would continue trying to keep the beaches safe.

The first reaction of some club members last night after William Richard Black was killed by a shark was that they would give up surf lifesaving.
