DISPUTE ON WAGES

Court Reserves Decision

The Arbitration Court, sitting in Christchurch yesterday, reserved its decision on whether rates of time and a half, as paid, or double time, as claimed, should be paid to a carpenter, who using a vehicle supplied by his employer, picked up other employees of the same company to take them to their place of work.

An Inspector of Awards (Sydney Jackson Harris) sought to recover from the employer (W. Williamson Construction Company, Ltd.) £2O for a breach of the New Zealand Carpenters and Joiners and Joiner’s Assistants’ Award.

He also sought £5O 18s 7d as wages owing from the company on the ground that between October 21, 1965 and May 16, 1966, they had employed Richard Arthur Gibson, a carpenter, and failed to pay him double time rates in that period when he was employed driving the truck. Mr H. Duncan appeared for the Inspector of Awards. Mr G. F. Rea appeared for W. Williamson Construction Company, and submitted the company was not, under the award conditions, required to pay double time for the work.

Members of the Court were Judge A. P. Blair, Mr A. B. Grant (workers' member) and Mr W. N. Hewitt (employers’ member).
