LIFEBOAT SUP
Survey In Progress
A survey of the Scarborough boat harbour was being carried out, said the City Engineer (Mr PG. Scoular) last evening when asked to comment on the Sumner Lifeboat Institution’s complaints that the boat could not be launched at low water.
The lifeboat Rescue II was unable to return to its slip on Thursday night after it had been launched to go to the rescue of students trapped between the sea and Whitewash Head.
“The slipway was designed so that the lifeboat could be launched at normal low tides, but some spring tides are up to a foot lower than normal,” Mr Scoular said. “A survey has been completed to the end of the breakwater, and we are awaiting favourable conditions for a survey past the breakwater. It is no use having conditions so that the lifeboat can be launched inside the breakwater but cannot go beyond it “There has been some silting at the end of the lifeboat launching slip and this will be dredged out when the survey is completed,” he said.
