RAILWAY CUTS
No Proposal Made '
The Railways Department had made no decisions on the reduction of its services said the district traffic manager (Mr M. R. Leineweber), commenting on a report from Westhport that an amendment to the timetable between Christchurch and Westport appeared likely. “In common with other Government departments, the railways will be examining all phases of its activities, but no proposal to reduce or eliminate rail-car or other services has been formulated,” Mr Leineweber said. “There will be no question of laying off staff.” The report from Westport said it was suggested that the 1.50 a.m. rail-car service from Christchurch which normally arrived there at 10.43 a.m. would terminate at Stillwater, and that passengers for Buller would have either to wait for the 10 a.m. service or find their own way home. It said it was feared that a reduction in services could mean a corresponding reduction in staff.
