CLEANING UP AT ONEHUNGA
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 26. Cleaning up will begin tomorrow at the fire-ravaged Onehunga plant of the New Zealand Co-operative Wool Marketing Association, Ltd.
The general manager, Mr T. C. Allen, said “preliminary salvage began today.”
Most of the 70 employees would be engaged in helping with the salvaging.
Wool to the value of £350,000 was damaged in the fire but Mr Allen estimates that a quarter of this can be salvaged. Most of the 7000 bales at the plant were owned by farmers and were being stored for selling. They were insured while being stored. A lot of the scouring machinery appeared to be salvageable and the building which housed it could be partially re-built, he said. The plant was still 75 per cent in production. “We can divert wool for processing and storing to other plants in the association," he said. “A number of rival scourers have also offered their assistance.” Firemen remained at the gutted plant throughout the week-end. Tonight the number was reduced to three.
