Brisk Batting By Riccarton
West-University ’s last two wlc-’ kets fell very quickly to give 1 Riccarton a lead of 39, and R. C. Motz led the way in converting this advantage to a really substantial one. He opened the innings and scored 22 in 15 minutes, while G. T. Barrett was scoreless. But Barrett, if careful, picked up runs steadily while R. G. Anderson gave a thrilling display of powerful, clean stroke- • making. This young player was j in tremendous form, batting - brilliantly to reach 50 in 66 , minutes, and the partnership ] yielded 134 in 113 minutes. An- j derson hit nine fours and two , sixes. | P. A. Stubbings and R. Miller batted brightly if briefly and : Motz was able to leave himself, with his declaration, nearly '
three hours to get West-Univer-sity out. There was not much prospect of West scoring 231 in 174 minutes, against an attack including Motz and J. W. Kiddey. West-University lost wickets regularly, although J. R. Veitch played another impressive innings of 43, including eight fours and a six. Riccarton seemed to be marching steadily ahead, but K. Adams, P. A. Sharp and R. K. Allen all batted stubbornly. Motz, from his short run, dug the ball in and the batsmen were forever getting it about the hip or chest. Ultimately he had his way. Sharp batted almost an hour, a brave effort, but the last wicket went 12 minutes from time when the reliable Barrett picked up a fine catch at leg slip. The umpires were Messrs J. W. Streeter and L. C. Moore.
