PROMOTING TOURISM

Efforts In U.S.

Urged

The image of New Zealand’s tourist potential in the United States was good, but it was limited, and this was only because it had not been pushed enough, said Mr L. Hewes in Christchurch. Mr Hewes is the vice-president in charge of sales an dadvertising for “Pacific Travel News,” the Pacific Area Travel Association.

He suggested that greater promotional efforts would be needed this year. “As you know in April airlines in the South Pacific have agreed to reduce their fares quite considerably. For example a couple in the United States will be able to come down here for almost 500 dollars cheaper. Now that’s a real travel inducement,” he said. However, because of the possible swing into the South Pacific, some of the more traditional tourist markets, seeing a threat to their own tourist industry, could be expected to intensify their promotional efforts in North America, he said. “It might be that you will have to do the same.”
