Verdict Of Not Guilty

(N.Z. Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, Fe>. 9.

After a retirement of about two hours, a jury in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North yesterday brought in a verdict of not guilty on Lloyd George Benton, aged 50, of Levin, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. The charge arose from an accident on September 27, 1966, on the Hokio Beach road at 11.40 p.m. between a motor vehicle driven by Benton and a cyclist, Robert William Hazelwood, aged 29, in which the cyclist suffered injuries from which he died. Mr J. A. Ongley appeared for the Crown, and Mr R. Stacey, of Wellington, assisted by Mr M. Turnbull, of Levin, for the accused. Mr Justice McGregor presided.
