Versatile Furniture

(By

STELLA BRUCE)

Much of today’s furniture is equally at home in any room in the house. We are no longer thinking in terms of living room suites and bedroom suites, but are buying furniture which is simple in design and flexible in purpose. Wardrobes, for instance, are not what they were. I was never quite sure why they had to be about Bft high, unless, of course, one’s clothes were Bft long. Now designers have realised that wardrobes do not really need to be more than 4Jft or sft. This means they do not really have to look like wardrobes at all.

So why not have one in the living room. There is usually more clutter in this room than any other. Stack it way out of sight Unless you happened to have a few Shakespeare first folios, the normal quota of household books is usually scruffy-looking, better out of sight than prominently displayed. Many modern wardrobes have built-in shelves and drawers which make them ideal for general purposes. A sensibly-chosen one can actually enhance a modern living room.
