FIRE DISASTER IN RESTAURANT
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MONTGOMERY (Alabama), February 8. Fire burst from a cloak-room and swept through a penthouse restaurant in Montgomery last night, trapping about 35 people on the top of a 10-storey block of flats, United Press International reported.
At least 32 people were killed and the final toll was expected to be higher. “There’s a bunch more up there,” said an assistant fire chief who was delegated to count the number of dead. Many of the bodies were found in one corner of the restaurant
Some of the trapped patrons smashed out windows and jumped on to a roof garden. One patron crashed
through a window to a ledge and to safety. One eyewitness, Mr Fred Hardy, a radio reporter, said he saw no-one jump, but that many people screamed for help from high floors. Firemen, using extension ladders, brought many people down from as high as the seventh floor.
The Victims were so badly burned that immediate identification was impossible in most cases.
