Limiting Staff In Govt. Departments

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, February 7. Government departments have been asked to “avoid making further staff appointments” until the State Services Commission review of departmental staffing is completed.

The Minister of Labour and chairman of the Cabinet committee on Government administration (Mr Shand) said that the exceptions to the rule in avoiding making further staff appointments would apply to school and university leavers and in special essential services.

He said that during the last 12 months particular attention had been focused on the control of staff numbers in government departments. Mr Shand said the Govern-

ment must ensure that whatever measures were adopted to meet the present economy difficulties, the staff strengths of departments were held at the minimum essential to carry out the priority commitments of the Government. “In this way, the Government will be setting an example for the business community and also impressing on departments the need for the utmost economy in administration,” he said.
