TROTTING Forbury Chance For Stewart Hanover

Although Stewart Hanover does not have the strongest form he could still be the first winner for Canterbury stables at Forbury Park Raceway tomorrow night.

Stewart Hanover is in the Summer Handicap, first leg of the on-course double on the first night of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s Festival meeting.

Stewart Hanover looked unlucky not to finish closer than fourth in the Pukaki Handicap at Washdyke last week. In that two-mile event he did well because he was forced very wide at a critical stage. Stewart Hanover’s effort certainly looked like that of an early improver. All that this smart three-year-old should require this week is a more favourable run for his second win of the season.

Eden Lad, Limelight and Smokey Range are last-start winners with which Stewart Hanover will have to contend.

Eden Lad improved on a sequence of minor placings with a staying success at Invercargill last week. He is bound to have strong Southland backing.

Limelight, which won as a sprinter at Washdyke last Saturday, could take beating again if he does not give ground at the start. He would have a much better record but for this failing.

Smokey Range’s record this season is one start for one win. He has had a restricted career because of unsoundness but if C. R. Berkett can produce him in the same form again, no doubt he will be the hardest to beat. He was most impressive at Rangiora last month.

Jimmy Dieman will be another strong contender for Southland. He was narrowly beaten at Invercargill last week. In his five starts beforehand he gained two wins and ! three other placings. Prospector, which has drawn No. 1 at the start, will strengthen the possibility of a Canterbury victory. At Washdyke last Saturday he recorded a first-class performance for third after galloping away from the mark in the Pukaki Handicap.

Good Stayer Newport Maid does not win out of turn but her best run as a two miler can be very good. She was successful over that distance at Addington Raceway the start before last. If she runs up to that form she should take beating in the Twilight Handicap, second leg of the on-course double.

Flying Step, which finished strongly for second to Sandy

Mac in the Winchester Handicap at Washdyke last Saturday, and Attorney, a sprint winner at Invercargill last week, might be Newport Maid’s strongest rivals. Sonny Jim, a two-mile winder at Greymouth the last time he raced, and Meadow Bank, which capped some useful pace form with a sprint win at Winton last month, could also take beating.

Fielder and Chief Command are fancied for the T.A.B. double, which will be on the Life Members’ Handicap and the Crescent Handicap. Chequer Board and Admire seem the most likely to test Fielder in the first leg. Chief Command, Co Pilot and Ulight are second-leg fancies. Although there was midweek rain in Dunedin the weather seems settled. If I there are no further showers! the track will be firm. 2
