Labour Surplus At Lyttelton
For the second successive day there was a large labour surplus on the Lyttelton waterfront because of the few vessels in port. When work began at 7 a.m. only 182 men were engaged and there remained a labour surplus of 420 men who received attendance pay but went jobless. The arrival of the freighter Cape Horn later with phosphate from Christmas Island for discharge brought another 30 men into work at 1 p.m. Present indications are that the port will not be busy again until next week.
