Swim Championships Yield 46 Records

The record-breaking at the Centennial Pool ended with a further nine new marks last night, to make the total broken during the six-session Canterbury championships an impressive 46.

The sources reported that a channel for various contacts between American diplomats and officials of the National Liberation Front, the political arm of the Viet Cong, had been used intermittently for several months. The meeting ended on I a foot of Wilson at the finish

a high note when Sockburn Park won an exciting men’s flying squadron event and broke one of the oldest senior records by l.lsec. The two most successful swimmers of the championships, Brent Lewis (Spreydon) and Catherine Whiting (Wharenui) were to the fore again last night, with two titles each. During the testing week of swimming, Lewis won 10 titles and broke nine records. Miss Whiting won eight titles and broke five records. She was also the member of five winning relay teams.

Brent Lewis’s brother Mark, and his sister Angela, each won five titles, to produce an impressive family total of 20 championship wins.

The final session again produced a good standard of performance by the junior girl freestyle swimmers. Glenis Dacombe (Rangiora) beat Maureen Darch (Spreydon) in a well-contested under-14 final of the 110 yd freestyle, and Miss Whiting moved up two sections to beat Jill Nielson (Wharenui) in the junior 440 yd freestyle.

Brent Lewis broke three records —two in one swim—and other new figures were set by Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood), Jaynie Parkhouse (Wharenui), Angela Lewis, Mark Trembath <Jellie Park), and the Wharenui girls’ under-14 freestyle relay team of Catherine Whiting, Felicity Bunt, Christine Hibbard and Rosemary O’Megan.

Sockburn Park led almost all the way in the flying squadron and the team’s veteran member proved that they retain great speed over a length. W. P. Brown led off with a sprint of 29.65ec and the other times, successively, were G. R. Stringer 28.0, B. M. Mustchin 28.3, and W. G. Andrews 27.8. The team’s time of lmin 53.75ec beat the record set by the 1963 Spreydon team, which included Andrew and Stringer. N. Williams (Wharenui) confirmed his medley mastery with a win in the 440 yd event from his young challenger, R. J. Wilson (Spreydon). D. M. Kindle (Wharenui) led for more than half the race, although he fell back in the breaststroke leg his freestyle brought him to within

Bryan Mustchin was untroubled by his rivals in the 220 yd junior boys’ freestyle final and the dominant figure in the women’s events, Miss J. Wright (Sockburn) won her sixth title, the 110 yd backstroke. She was less than 2sec off Tui Shipston’s centre record.
