Exciting Title Croquet

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The most exciting game of the national croquet championships was played on the Mount Eden lawns yesterday between J. Prince (Lower Hutt) and A. D. M. Ross (Auckland) in the first round of the men’s, championship. Ross made an early break to 4-back. Prince hit in, and set out to triple peel Ross’s forward ball. Because the pilot ball of the break fell short at 4-back, Prince abandoned the rover peel after making a 2-back. Thus he was forced to peel rover when making the hoop for his own ball. In doing so, Prince got n n indifferent rush to the peg and failed to peg Ross out.

From the contact Ross assembled an all-round break and, playing very steadily, took the first game from the champion. Prince took the second and third games—Prince beat Ross 15-26, 26-1, 26-11.
