Welfare State
Sir, —“A. B. Cedarian” gives the typical Tory attitude to the welfare state when he quotes rubbish from “Town,” which is obviously a Tory publication. Taxes are raised for many other purposes besides Social Security, e.g., defence, public works and education. The welfare state provides security from a lifetime burden of doctor’s and hospital bills if a breadwinner falls sick. I have found that very few workers have been able to afford to purchase annuities for their old age, because they have to pay off homes, and bring up children on much lower income’s than do business and professional men. The Social Security Act warrants extension and revision; but not retrenchments as suggested by “A, B. Cedarian.”—Yours, DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. January 25, 1967.
