Export Openings In Switzerland

There is a market in Switzerland for long, woollen underwear from New Zealand, according to “Export News.”

Other possible exports to Switzerland are asparagus, canned french beans, canned fish, airfreighted strawberries and winter clothing. The magazine published by the Department of Industries and Commerce says recent negotiations at diplomatic level had also paved the way for increased exports of lamb to Switzerland.

At present the balance of trade is strongly in favour of the Swiss.

For the year ended last June, New Zealand’s exports to Switzerland totalled £256,497. of which £218,707 Was meat.

New Zealand purchases for the same period totalled £3.613,392.

Less than 11 per cent of this figure was for watches and clocks. Tulle and lace imports cost £184,000 and machinery and machine parts cost a total of £712,000. The Department of Industries and Commerce reports that Swiss consumers recently bought 200 tons of New Zealand lamb in a few days.

During the five previous years the Swiss had not bought more than four tons in any one year. Strenuous efforts by the

New Zealand Apple and Pear Board had also brought results, and in five years the sales of apples to Switzerland had risen from 5000 cases to 90,000, said the department There was an increasing demand for under-ski wear, and long woollen underwear was not readily available in Switzerland.

“Switzerland's famed ski resorts such as St. Moritz and Davos are rendezvous of the very wealthy,” it reports. “Here New Zealand-made sleeping bags, parkas, and other mountaineering and ski wear could find a market. In Switzerland quality and value are more important than pure price, and New Zealand manufacturers, with their long record as suppliers to Himalayan and Antarctic expeditions, have a reputation which might help them to break into this important market.”
