Building Demolished

Ah Inner city building which has served as a Masonic temple, auction room and mass X-ray clinic during its near-century existence, was demolished yesterday. The building, which was in Manchester street behind the new Manchester United building, was erected for £B5 in 1870. In recent years it has served as a mass X-ray clinic for the Department of Health. The Ministry of Works had the building demolished for safety reasons. The north wall began to list some years ago, and was four inches and a half out of plumb when the bulldozers went to work on Saturday morning.

Two shops in front of the old building will stay for the time being and the vacant land will be used as a car park. The original wooden building was added to in 1883 by the erection of a heavy ornamental pediment which cost £ll4l.

The building was later sold to Mr P. S. Nicholls who converted it to auction rooms. The building was bought by the Crown in March, 1952, and was to have been used as a Government eentre.

The original building was set back from Manchester street and the existing shops were opened after the lodge moved to its new premises in Gloucester street.
