DUCHESS FREED
Demonstration Leader (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ALMERIA (Spain), Jan. 22. The Duchess of Medina Sidonia has been freed after spending three days in gaol for trying to lead a protest march from Palomares, where four United States hydrogen bombs fell accidentally last year after two aircraft collided. It is not yet known whether the 30-year-old duchess will be tried for disturbing the peace. A judge of Spain’s public order court in Madrid is still studying the case. The duchess was arrested last week while leading hudreds of demonstrators out of the village to mark the anniversary of the H-bomb accident.
The demonstration was to send a 40-man delegation to petition the United States Embassy in Madrid for 2,500,000 dollars compensation for damage caused by the massive security operations against radio-activity. Large sums in compensation have already been paid.
Saturn Explodes.—The third stage of the huge Saturn IV rocket that is scheduled to orbit three astronauts late this year, blew up on a test stand last week. The blast could be a serious blow to the Saturn IV moon rocket development programme which is already about four months behind schedule.—Sacramento, Jan, 22.
