WELLINGTON LOSES MATCH OUTRIGHT

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Wellington crashed to outright defeat against Auckland in a Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.

Wellington, winner of the shield last year, lost by an innings and 12 runs. For the second time in the match, Wellington’s strong batting line-up failed, and the second innings realised only 185 runs. Wellington was dismissed before the tea break. The batsmen committed the same errors they made on Friday and in earlier matches this season. The one notable exception was the captain, D. O. Neely, with a fighting innings of 59. He came in with Wellington five for 62. When he was out the score had gone to eight for 164. Neely batted 144 minutes and hit seven fours. Most of the other batsmen got themselves out with weak strokes or because of lack of concentration and purpose. Neely alone was the victim of a vindictive pitch. The ball from which he was caught leaped from the pitch with startling suddenness and took the edge of the bat The most successful Auckland bowler on Saturday was R. S. Cunis with five for so. Thin, together with hia one first

innings wicket and 99 runs in Auckland’s big total, gave him a fine match. R. E. Sutton, who wrecked Wellington’s first innings, took two for 38 on Saturday. Apart from Neely, only five Wellington batsmen reached double figures in the second innings, and none of the five got to 20. Last year’s New Zealand test captain, B. W. Sincliar, continued his run of low scores with nine and four in the match. Scores:— AUCKLAND First Innings 416 for nine dec. WELLINGTON First Innings .. 219 Second Innings B. A. G.
