Auckland Close To Innings Victory

(New Zealand Press Association)

WHANGAREI. To all intents and purposes Auckland is left only with mopping-up operations to complete an outright win over Northern Districts at Whangarei today.

Northern, trailing by 193 runs on the first innings, had lost five second innings wickets for 84 at stumps yesterday.

It needs another 109 runs to make Auckland bat again. The Northern Districts skipper, B. H. Pairaudeau, who is 30 not out, seems to be the only batsman capable of keeping the powerful Auckland attack at bay.

He was shaping confidently at stumps but none of the other recognised Northern batsmen could make any headway. This time it was the leftarm pace bowler, R. E. Sutton, who made the initial break-through and he had taken three for 25 at stumps. All the Auckland batsmen got among the runs, nine of them reaching double figures. M. G. Burgess, playing in his first Plunket Shield match, compiled a smart 50, which included a six and six fours. R. W. Morgan, in spite of mistiming his sweep shot several times and surviving three chances, played some delightful strokes in making 59. The brightest partnership was between J. T. Sparling and N. S. Harford, who added 39 runs in even time before Sparling was run out The spinners, headed by N. Puna, dominated the Northern attack. Their accuracy, plus excellent field-placing by Pairaudeau, kept the Auckland scoring within reasonable bounds. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First Innings ..127 Second Innings H. T. Schuster, b Sutton .. 15 W.
