Abortion
Sir,—Various opinions have been put forward on whether abortion should be made legal. I, for one, say definitely yes in a large number of cases. In view of the history of our species, a cavalcade of wars, atrocities, and other incidents of inhumanity to man by man, to be born in holy wedlock is tragic enough, but to be born an unwanted illegitimate baby is bordering on criminal negligence. Our homes are now overloaded with a backlog of unwanted illegitimate babies, waiting for adoption by some childless couples, who seem to prefer dogs or cats as a hobby instead of putting their shoulders to the wheel and making a Godly gesture in helping to solve a problem that seems to have got out of hand.—Yours, etc., P. L. BASHFORD. Kaiapoi, December 29, 1966.
Sir,—ls not “Sixteen-year-old” somewhat hasty in condemning other people and their faults? She says she has an understanding Christian mother, but talking about Christianity, are not the most important principles forgiveness and understanding? What did Christ say when the people wanted to stone a woman who had
sinned? He forgave her, did he not? Even if she is sure she will be a virgin on her wedding day ( she cannot expect everybody to be the same. I was one; but I did not feel any more proud. I am just thankful that God gave me that strength. A girl who gives in to the wrong man, does not have to be bad. It is often proof of a great love, misdirected perhaps, but still love. “Sixteen-year-old” should not condemn something she does not understand.—Yours, etc., MOTHER. December 30, 1966. Sir, —My warmest congratulations and deep respect to “Sixteen-Year-Old” on her well-worded letter. Thank God there are still levelheaded teen-agers. Life is not created by one alone, as I see it; and, putting it plainly, the bull is wanted, but not the calf.—Yours, etc., DEEPLY CONCERNED MOTHER. December 30, 1966.
Sir, —I endorse the sentiments expressed by “Sixteen-
Year-Old.” It Is most heartening to find a youngster for whom Christian teachings have real meaning. I trust some, of your other correspondents will profit from such a praiseworthy letter. — Yours, etc., JAY-DOUBLE-EM. December 30, 1966. [This correspondence is now closed. Ed., “The Press.”]
