Police Will Stay Longer In Cyprus
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 20. The New Zealand police in Cyprus will remain with the United Nations force there until June, 1967, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced today.
This announcement followed the decision by the Security Council last week to extend the force’s mandate. Mr Holyoake said there would be a partial rotation of the unit next month with the replacement of 15 police. “The Government has taken into account the Secre-
tary-General’s report that, but for the presence of the force in Cyprus during the last six months, there could have been serious fighting,” Mr Holyoake said. U Thant has reported that the removal of the force at this time would create an unwarranted risk of a renewal of fighting.
