FISHERMEN CAPTURED
Incident Off N. Vietnam
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAIGON, December 21. Forty-eight Chinese fishermen were captured in the Gulf of Tonkin more than two weeks ago, and are being held prisoner by United States and South Vietnamese authorities, highly-informed sources said today, United Press International reported.
The sources said the fishermen were stopped off the North Vietnamese coast under the assumption that they were North Vietnamese. It was not learned until later that they were Chinese, from the island of Hainan. It was understood American authorities were trying to find a means of returning the fishermen, who range in age from 17 to 70.
