Talavera was in outstanding form at Awapuni yesterday morning. She ran the best five furlongs of the morning in two seconds faster time than the next best. Jay Av and Both Ways.

On the course proper with the pegs not as far out as last week, Talavera ran five furlongs in Imin 3 3-ssec. the last three keenly in -39 sec. This was a .fine effort. She looks ready to show improvement.

Jay Ay and Both Ways were both going strongly at the end of five furlongs in Imin 5 2-5 sec, the last three in 39 2-Ssec. Jay Ay has done well since Woodville.

The outstanding half-mile of the morning was credited to Cosmic Ray and Wilma Rudolph. They took 50sec. the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. Cosmic Ray. with a weight advantage, finished slightly in front. Fountain Miss was ahead of Esteem over half a mile in 51 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. It was a good effort by Fountain Miss as she ran greenly in the straight and finished very wide out.

On the inside trial Fast Company showed that her first-day race has improved her by running three furlongs without apparent effort in 35 3-ssec. Persian Star went fast over six furlongs in Imin 15|sec, the last three in 38 4-ssec.

Bandon went quietly over five furlongs but still ran Imin 4sec, the last three in 38sec. He is in good order for his second cup bid.

Carpenter Fit

Carpenter completed his preparation for the James Hazlett Gold Cup at the Dunedin meeting on Saturday with a most impressive workout at Wingatui yesterday, when the gallops were held on the outside of the course proper under Ideal conditions.

■ Ridden by his race rider, R. N. Marsh, Carpenter started from the mile and a quarter peg and built up speed from the seven furlongs to run clear of his stablemate, Dalabella lE. J. Didham), which joined in at the six furlongs. Carpenter ran the distance in Imin 33sec, and continued a strong gallop to run the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Panace (J, D. Pankhurst) and his stablemate, Spick and Span (L. W. Hare), were together over five furlongs in the smart time of Imin 5 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec.

The best half-mile was credited to Left Over (R. Korostchuk) and Kelvin Lad <A. McKeown) in 51 2-ssec, the first furlong in 12 l-ssec.
